Life sentence for defendant in femicide case

The incident occurred on October 14, 2023, at approximately 23:30 in a park in the Tikenli neighborhood of the Vezirköprü district. Ömer Teker, who was subject to a restraining order, called his common-law wife Huriye Özkan to the park under the pretext of talking. During an argument that broke out in the park, he stabbed Huriye Özkan with a knife he had brought with him. Her daughter, N. Özkan (17), who tried to protect her mother, was also injured in the attack. The mother and daughter, who were seriously injured, were taken to Vezirköprü State Hospital. While Huriye Özkan could not be saved despite all interventions, her daughter survived with injuries. Ömer Teker, who fled after the incident, was caught by law enforcement and arrested.

THE HARSHES PENALTY

The detained defendant, Ömer Teker, was present at the final hearing held today at the Vezirköprü High Criminal Court. The court panel concluded that the defendant's actions constituted the crime of "intentional killing of a woman" and sentenced him to aggravated life imprisonment.

The hearing was attended by Samsun Bar Association Women's Rights Commission Chair Attorney Hale Günaydın, women's associations, Huriye Özkan's relatives, and numerous citizens.

PRESS STATEMENT IN FRONT OF THE COURTHOUSE

In a press statement made by women's rights advocates in front of the Vezirköprü Courthouse before the hearing, it was stated, "We will not forget Huriye Özkan, and we will not let her be forgotten."

CHP Samsun Deputy Murat Çan, citizens, and the late Huriye Özkan's daughter, N. Özkan, also attended the press statement.
