Young girl rescued from earthquake rubble begins to speak 2 years later: 'I couldn't say mom'

The Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes caused massive destruction in Hatay, where approximately 25 thousand people lost their lives. 17-year-old Yeliz Seyyar, the daughter of the Seyyar family who were caught in the earthquake in the Çekmece neighborhood of the Defne district, was trapped under the rubble.

Rescued by her family, the young girl suffered bone loss in her jaw due to the impact she received to her head, leaving her unable to move her jaw.

After the treatment process at the hospital, the family began living in a container city in the Antakya district. While they previously had to feed the young girl by hand using a syringe, she is now able to eat at least a little bit following her treatment process.

Seyyar, who could only communicate with her family in writing, can now call out to her family by saying 'mom' and 'dad'.

"MY DAUGHTER CAN SPEAK AT LEAST A LITTLE"

Stating that her daughter's condition is better 2 years after the earthquake, mother Fatma Seyyar said, "My daughter, my son, and I were trapped in the rubble during the earthquake. While we got through it with fractures, my daughter's jaw was completely broken. With the help of philanthropists, she had surgery at a private hospital and reached this state.

She will have another surgery. After the surgery, teeth will be fitted to her jaw. The treatment process will take another year. Thank God, 2 years have passed in this situation. My daughter can now speak at least a little, and we were able to feed her liquid foods slowly. We used to feed her with a syringe. Now she can open her mouth at least a little. We still experience the same pain every February 6. I am happy that my daughter was rescued from the earthquake alive.

On February 6, I tell my daughter let's go for a walk, but my daughter doesn't want to come and doesn't want to relive the same memories. After our house was destroyed, I can never pass by there. When I passed by a year later, the rubble of the house had been cleared," she said.

"I COULDN'T SAY MOM BEFORE"

Yeliz Seyyar also said, "The 2 years were difficult. I am much better than I was at first. My jaw is better, I can speak a little, and I can eat at least a little. I couldn't say mom before, but now I can say it," she expressed.
