Decision made to continue detention for journalist Suat Toktaş!
The detention of journalist Suat Toktaş, who was arrested and sent to prison as part of the 'expert witness investigation' launched against Halk TV, has been ordered to continue on the grounds that there is 'evidence indicating the existence of strong suspicion of a crime.'
A new development has occurred in the 'expert witness investigation' launched against journalists for allegedly meeting with and reporting on expert witness S.B., whom Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu had exposed in relation to lawsuits and investigations filed against him. The indictment prepared against Halk TV Editor-in-Chief Suat Toktaş, Barış Pehlivan, Seda Selek, Serhan Asker, and Kürşad Oğuz has been accepted. The indictment requests prison sentences ranging from 6 to 14 years for defendants Barış Pehlivan and Kürşad Oğuz, and from 4 to 9 years for Suat Toktaş, Seda Selek, and Serhan Asker.
On the other hand, according to a report by Furkan Karabay from Gazete Duvar, the Istanbul 54th Criminal Court of First Instance decided to continue the detention of Halk TV Editor-in-Chief Suat Toktaş on the grounds that there is “evidence indicating the existence of strong suspicion of a crime.”
The court argued that if judicial control measures were applied to Toktaş, there could be attempts to influence evidence and exert pressure on other defendants.
It was decided that Toktaş's detention would continue.
Regarding Barış Pehlivan, Hakan Kürşad Oğuz, Seda Selek, and Serhan Asker, the court ruled that judicial control measures should remain in place, arguing that there was no reason to lift them.
The date for the first hearing was set for March 4, 2025, at 09:30.
