Statement from AKP Group Chairman Güler on the Iraq-Syria mandate: 'CHP voted yes to the same mandate in 2016 and 2017'

AKP Group Chairman Abdullah Güler criticized the CHP for opposing the presidential mandate to extend the deployment of troops to Iraq and Syria for another 2 years, citing the argument that "we do not want foreign soldiers in Turkey."

Güler recalled that on October 1, 2016, and September 23, 2017, the then-CHP Group Deputy Chairman Engin Altay had stated that they would vote "yes" to the same mandate, describing it as "a mandate that enables the state's fight against terrorist organizations," and noted that the CHP had indeed voted "yes" to the mandate discussed on those dates.

AK PARTY GROUP CHAIRMAN GÜLER CONTINUED AS FOLLOWS:

"This mandate is not a mandate regarding the arrival of foreign soldiers in Turkey. A coalition was established to fight against DAESH and similar terrorist structures in northern Syria and Iraq, based on the UN Security Council resolutions of 2014 and 2015. We are one of the 80 countries participating in this coalition. Within this scope, we informed the CHP parliamentary group by also conveying the text of the UN Security Council resolutions to them.

This mandate was previously submitted to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey within the scope of the decisions taken by the UN Security Council in 2014 and 2015, and the CHP said 'yes'. However, the CHP is now saying 'no' to the same mandate, claiming that it 'allows foreign soldiers to come to Turkey.' Yet, we have informed CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the CHP parliamentary group that this is not the case."
