Aytun Çıray, who resigned from IYI Party, evaluates developments in his former party
Former IYI Party İzmir MP Aytun Çıray made a striking comment regarding the wave of resignations. Çıray stated, "Akşener is like a political suicide bomber; she is destroying the party."
The earthquake of resignations continues within the IYI Party. Yesterday, Deputy Chair Ece Güner announced her resignation in a statement, and IYI Party Deputy Chair Ahmet Zeki Üçok was dismissed by Chair Meral Akşener. Today, IYI Party Istanbul MP Mehmet Salim Ensarioğlu announced that he has resigned from his party.
Former IYI Party İzmir MP Aytun Çıray commented on the ongoing wave of resignations in the party.
Speaking on Artı TV, Çıray said of Chair Akşener, "She is like a political suicide bomber; she is destroying the party," and underscored that resignations could continue:
“Unfortunately, that is how it looks. I would never have wished for it to be this way, but that is the trajectory. We are encountering a new incident every day. This incident becomes a precursor and a harbinger of a new incident that may occur.”
Çıray touched upon how the policy produced by the AKP regarding the DEM Party in the previous elections found an echo within the IYI Party:
“After the 2019 local elections, the collaborations that the IYI Party—then known as the HDP—and many other political parties made in Istanbul for the sake of democracy disturbed the AKP.
Following this, they shifted their strategy and developed a policy aimed at stirring up the party and increasing suspicions regarding the HDP. We saw how successful this was in the presidential elections. They achieved success, and the presidential election that was on the verge of being won was lost.”
"IT IS ALSO HARMING THE OPPOSITION"
Stating that the ruptures within the IYI Party began four years ago, Çıray noted that party leader Meral Akşener's policies are destroying the party and also harming the opposition:
“Whatever happened, happened after the 2019 elections. In the 2020 congress, the purging of center-liberal democratic politicians like me from the IYI Party was brought to the agenda for the first time. After that, the process continued and intensified. At the point reached today, they are practically committing political hara-kiri within the IYI Party leadership and administration. As I said in a previous interview, Akşener is acting like a political suicide bomber. She is destroying herself and her party. She is also causing significant harm to the members of the Nation Alliance.”
"A DISINTEGRATING POLITICAL PARTY"
He stated that there is no longer any possibility of an alliance between the IYI Party and the CHP in the local elections to be held on March 31:
“Yes, I think it is completely closed. In any case, an alliance made after this stage would not provide any positive benefit. The process that began with the 'table crisis' is progressing in a much more severe way. The picture that emerges is that the IYI Party looks like a disintegrating political party.”
Touching upon his own resignation process, Çıray finally said that he felt sadness due to the ugly intra-party discussions that have been taking place recently:
'I waited until the end of the elections so that the elections would not be harmed, and afterwards, I resigned from the IYI Party without setting any conditions. There are other ugly discussions happening within the party right now. I do not want to get involved in those discussions. Those discussions are already the greatest indicator of the state to which the IYI Party has been reduced. I say this with sadness.”
