Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu, wife of detained presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, reacted to the government's rhetoric regarding the "right to be presumed innocent" in a post on her social media account.
Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu stated that they have been kept apart from their loved ones for 19 months and reminded the authorities of the same legal principles. In her post, she emphasized that they want the presumption of innocence and the right to be presumed innocent to be protected, that detention should not turn into a preemptive punishment, and that the Constitution should be applied equally to everyone.
"WHY IS THE LAW NOT APPLIED THE SAME WAY TO EVERYONE?"
İmamoğlu stated, "We are not saying that no one should be tried. We are saying that laws should be enforced, evidence should speak, and everyone should be tried fairly." Noting that these demands should not be seen as a request for privilege, İmamoğlu asked, "Why is the law not applied the same way to everyone?"
Arguing that people's reputations are damaged during investigation and detention processes before a final verdict is reached, İmamoğlu addressed the government with the words, "For whom are the presumption of innocence and the right to be presumed innocent valid? Is the Constitution applied according to the person, the position, or political views?"
Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu concluded her statement by saying, "We do not want privilege; we want equality. We do not want double standards in law; we want the same justice for everyone."
