Ekrem Baki resigns from CHP and his Üsküdar and IMM council memberships

Ekrem Baki, who joined the CHP at the beginning of this year, announced that he has resigned from his party and his municipal council memberships.

Baki announced on his social media account that he has also resigned from his memberships in the Üsküdar Municipal Council and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council.

Baki, who was arrested before the election for the Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar, had been released four days ago with a house arrest order.

In his statement, Baki noted that he made his decision as a "requirement of my responsibility to our people and my conscience."

"With the belief that positions are temporary, as of 25.09.2026, I have resigned from my membership in the Republican People's Party (CHP), and my memberships in the Üsküdar Municipal Council and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council."

In his statement, Baki expressed that he had shared his views and suggestions regarding the current local and national governance crisis with the relevant individuals, and that he had made the decision to resign "in accordance with his political principles."

He noted that he would continue to work to the best of his ability to contribute to Üsküdar, Istanbul, and the country.

It is expected that a substitute member from the AKP will be called to fill the vacancy left by Baki.

According to the relevant regulation, even if a person has switched to another party or become independent in municipal councils, the substitute member of the party to which the person belonged at the time they were elected is called to fill the vacant full membership.
