Joint statement from CHP provincial chairs on 'Statute Congress'

CHP provincial chairs have issued a joint statement regarding the convening of the Statute Congress. The statement noted, “The issue of convening our Statute Congress to make comprehensive changes to our Party Statute was evaluated at our Provincial Chairs Meeting held on November 14, 2023.

Since the legal process regarding the Statute Congress, which was announced by our party management before the Congress, was not initiated at that time, it was seen that it was technically impossible to hold the Congress on that date. Even if a decision were made today, the holding of our Statute Congress would fall at the earliest to the end of December,” it was stated.

Drawing attention to the time remaining until the local elections, the statement said, “As is known, there are 138 days left until the local elections to be held on March 31, 2024. The election calendar will begin on January 1, 2024, and candidate determination and propaganda processes will be carried out rapidly.

Our statute in its current form allows for the implementation of central polling, primary, and trend polling methods in candidate determination. A method should be determined by taking the opinions of our provincial chairs on this matter,” the statements included.

In the statement, where it was recommended that the Statute Congress be held in May 2024, it was said, “Our 81 provincial chairs, by common consensus, do not deem it appropriate for statute changes to be discussed with a compressed calendar and in a narrow timeframe during the election process. 

A recommendation decision has been taken for the Statute Congress to be held at the end of May 2024, and for the legal process to be initiated at the first Party Assembly meeting, so that a statute commission, which will be established urgently and start working immediately, can carry out a comprehensive study by taking the opinions of our organizations and ensure that regulations meeting today's needs are included in our Statute.

A consensus has been reached that the democratic promises regarding the statute change mentioned to date by our 7th Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and our Chairman Özgür Özel should also be included in our new Statute,” the statements were used.
