Özgür Özel’s new roadmap for the CHP: He announces his snap election plan
Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel made statements regarding recent developments within the party and the agenda for the party congress, stating that the struggle will be carried out in three stages. Özel also gave important messages regarding claims of a new party. Özel made evaluations regarding the snap election plan.
The political tension and demands for an extraordinary congress following the court-ordered return of the former administration continue to shake the CHP. In a television program he attended, Özgür Özel argued that the collection of delegate signatures and the congress process in the CHP must proceed transparently, and he made notable calls to the current administration.
Addressing Kılıçdaroğlu, Özel said, "Let him take the delegate signatures to the Çankaya District Election Board and say, 'I have enough signatures, can I hold it?', and let him get his answer."
“WE MUST BE READY FOR A SNAP ELECTION”
Özgür Özel stated that they are making preparations against the possibility of a snap election. "If there is going to be a snap election this October, we must be ready for that too," said Özel, and when asked about July, he replied, "Of course, of course. We are preparing technically." Özel expressed that while forming a new party might not be on the agenda at this stage, preparations would be made.
TWO ALTERNATIVES ON THE TABLE
Özel stated that they are focusing on two separate options against a possible early election scenario. He said the first of these is to establish a new political party, and the second option is to negotiate with some existing political parties to change their charters, names, logos, and administrations. Özel said they want to keep an option ready through which they can take quick action.
EMPHASIS ON "THREE STAGES" IN THE STRUGGLE
CHP leader Özgür Özel stated that uncertainties are increasing within the party and across the country, and that social hopes are being shaken in the shadow of economic and social problems, adding that the struggle is continuing not only in political but also in legal and physical dimensions. Summarizing this process, he said, "We are handling this struggle under three headings: legal, political, and physical. We organize rallies when necessary, seek our legal rights when necessary, and integrate with our nation when necessary."
Touching upon the change processes within the party, Özel emphasized that as a chairman who took office at the last regular congress, his mandate is still with him. He also stated that a large part of the public is against the "absolute nullity" decision taken, and that only Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç defended this decision.
RESPONSE TO NEW PARTY CLAIMS
Regarding the rumors of a new party, Özel underlined that they want to continue the struggle within the CHP first. Stating that there are intense demands to "fight to the end within the party," Özel noted that the judicial recess will begin after July 20 and that the room for maneuver regarding political processes will narrow during this period. However, regarding a new party, he put an end to the speculations by saying, "We do not want to establish a new party. We have no desire for this, it is very clear."
Özgür Özel stated that the influence of names close to the government is felt in the party and that some decision-making processes, in particular, are leaked to the outside. Giving Sinan Burhan as an example, Özel drew attention to information leaks in the party and guidance provided through the media with the words, "Sinan Burhan is very sure, he says 'he will be dismissed' and what he says happens."
Emphasizing that the interventions in the party building and the controversial appointments in the communications team are damaging the CHP's corporate culture, Özel reiterated his claim that the party is "under occupation." He said, "If a political party is being managed not by its members or the delegates elected by those members, but by the decisions of the rival party's judicial bodies, that party is under occupation. We are resisting this occupation."
Speaking about the agenda of the congress and group meetings, Özel argued that the will of the CHP comes from the grassroots and that the initiative of the delegates is decisive. Saying, "We will return to that father's hearth sooner or later," Özel underlined that the party will never give up on Republican values structurally.
Özel pointed to the future vision with the words, "While three out of four young people are thinking of leaving the country, they decided to stay for one more election on the evening of March 31. We are the hope of those young people. Therefore, if there is a new party, it will not be Özgür Özel's new party. If there is a new party, it will be the new party of the youth, because the Republican People's Party is under AK Party occupation and the hope of these people has been destroyed; it will be the new party of the retiree, the laborer, the tradesman, the farmer, the fisherman, the beekeeper. The only duty of that party is to change this government. We are under attack because we have not lost our motivation to change this government. The CHP that does not accept defeat, the winning CHP is under occupation, the elected CHP is under occupation."
Finally, stating that the party will continue to resist across Turkey and act with the will of the grassroots, Özgür Özel said he will continue to be in the field in the coming days.
