Democratic Left Party (DSP) Chairman Önder Aksakal reacted to MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's remarks regarding Abdullah Öcalan during his speech at his party's İzmir Provincial Congress.
Addressing the "Terror-Free Turkey" process at the congress held at the Mustafa Necati Cultural Center, Aksakal stated that while no one would object to the end of terrorism, the state cannot operate outside its rules, laws, and constitution in efforts aimed at this goal.
Aksakal stated that he finds Bahçeli's assessment that Öcalan could be given a "politicization coordination" role within the scope of the process unacceptable. The DSP leader expressed their opposition to granting a role outside of his current legal status to a convict serving an aggravated life sentence.
This issue must now be clearly clarified by the President. It must be presented with its truths and in the dimension it should be.
Aksakal argued that the legal framework referenced in Bahçeli's statements has not yet been implemented. Stating that the content of the regulation accepted by a high vote in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) has not been put into practice, Aksakal expressed that the uncertainty regarding the process must be resolved.
Stating that as the DSP, they will not consent to keeping the issue on the agenda or granting a "title" to Öcalan, Aksakal demanded that the debate be clearly clarified by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
