TKP statement on the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement: Military alliances bring war, not security

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) has issued a written statement regarding the "Mecca Joint Defense Agreement," which is reported to have been signed between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The TKP claimed that the agreement drags Turkey into an "extremely dangerous military adventure."

The statement noted that the most significant provision of the agreement reflected in the public domain is that an armed attack against any of the three countries will be considered an attack against all of them. The TKP argued that it is unclear under what conditions and on whose behalf this obligation would drag Turkey into a war.

In the party's statement, it was expressed that there is no guarantee that the conflicts in which Saudi Arabia is a party in Yemen and the Red Sea will not be brought before Turkey in the future as a "joint defense obligation." It was suggested that potential attacks against Iran, a war that could escalate in Yemen, and regional reckonings could make Turkey a direct party to the conflict.

TKP'S CRITICISMS

The TKP stated that the Gaza Plan, pressures on Iran, the rising tension in Yemen and the Red Sea, and the Turkish-Saudi-Pakistani security agreement are not independent developments. The statement alleged that the AKP government has taken on the role of a subcontractor for regional plans defined as "American peace."

A harsh period awaits a vast geography extending from the Middle East to the Red Sea and Africa. Military alliances bring war, not security.

The statement argued that Turkey's security does not come from more military alliances and armament, but from withdrawing from NATO, closing foreign bases, sending foreign troops away, and establishing relationships with neighboring countries based on equality, sovereignty, and mutual respect.

The TKP stated that the public should be vigilant against new war scenarios that will be brought to the agenda with "nationalist rhetoric," "neo-Ottoman" dreams, sectarian discourse, or "national security" justifications. The party noted that organizing is vital to "reject the fate that imperialism and reactionism have cut out for our country."
