YENİ Party Chairman Özgür Özel reacts to school attack in Başakşehir: The state has failed to fulfill its responsibility

YENİ Party Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement on his social media account following the attack at a middle school in Istanbul's Başakşehir district.

Stating that one student lost their life in the attack and seven students are still receiving treatment, Özel offered his condolences to the family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

In his statement, Özel emphasized that school security is one of the fundamental responsibilities of the public authority.

“Unfortunately, we are speaking once again today following an attack that took place at a school,” said Özel, expressing that they are saddened and angry due to the incident.

Reminding the public of reports regarding the marketing of bulletproof backpacks for children, Özel made the following assessment:

The safety of schools and students is entrusted to those who govern the country. If families are worried about the safety of their children when sending them to school, and if bulletproof backpacks are being marketed for 6-7-year-old children, then there is a state responsibility that has not been fulfilled.

Özel stated that they had previously issued warnings regarding similar incidents and said that those who failed to take the necessary precautions are the “political culprits of this situation.”
