DİSK President Çerkezoğlu's statement on Taksim: 'It will continue to be a symbol of our democratic struggle'

Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) President Arzu Çerkezoğlu evaluated the discussions and the process following the May 1st Labor Day. Çerkezoğlu made statements regarding the plans to march to Taksim Square and how the Constitutional Court rulings affected the process.

Çerkezoğlu stated that their decision as DİSK not to hold a celebration outside of Taksim Square was clear, and noted that the event held in Saraçhane on May 1st was carried out in constant communication with political parties and non-governmental organizations.

According to the report by Duvar, Çerkezoğlu emphasized their determination to exercise their democratic rights in the face of police barricades and interventions, stating, "Despite all kinds of difficulties, we continued our struggle to defend our rights. May 1st is a very important day in our working life and our democratic struggle, and we will do our best to celebrate this day freely."

TAKSİM IS A SYMBOL FOR US

Çerkezoğlu stated that their goal to celebrate May 1st in Taksim Square for the coming years continues, saying, "Taksim is not just a square for us, but also a symbol of our democratic struggle. Gathering here freely and en masse is indispensable for us. We will continue our work and efforts in this direction."
