A comeback plan for MySpace: The Vanderhook brothers are waiting for the 'right time'

A new comeback plan is on the agenda for MySpace, which left its mark on the early social media era of the internet. Tim and Chris Vanderhook, co-founders of Viant Technology, which holds the rights to the platform, announced in a "MySpace" documentary directed by Tommy Avalone that they want to revive the brand.

While the Vanderhook brothers stated that they are determined to relaunch MySpace, they did not share details regarding when the project will be launched, what kind of interface it will have, or which features will make it stand out. The statement made by Tim and Chris Vanderhook in the documentary indicates that the initiative is still in the preparation and timing phase.

We're going to relaunch it, we're just waiting for the right time. If this attempt doesn't work, we'll try again.

A PREVIOUS 150 MILLION DOLLAR ATTEMPT

The Vanderhook brothers, who purchased the MySpace brand in 2011, had previously made an attempt to build the platform from scratch. However, this process resulted in a significant financial loss. While Tim Vanderhook described that period as a "total hurricane of loss," Chris Vanderhook stated that they lost more than 150 million dollars.

The timeline and product details for the plan to revive MySpace have not yet been announced.

Founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, MySpace reached a wide audience, particularly with its customizable profile pages, music-focused structure, and the ability for users to add graphics and code to their pages. The platform became one of the largest websites of its time, reaching 115 million monthly visitors in 2008.

One of the cult elements of MySpace was that co-founder Tom Anderson was automatically added as the first friend to every new user. However, the rise of Facebook, changes in social media habits, and internal ownership processes caused the platform to lose its influence over time.

Today's social media market is quite different from the era when MySpace was strong. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and Reddit compete with recommendation algorithms, vertical video formats, content creator tools, and targeted advertising models. For this reason, for MySpace's comeback to be successful, it will need to develop a model that goes beyond nostalgia, is mobile-first, and offers users a new reason to join.
