Apple CEO Tim Cook defends Vision Pro price: 'It brings tomorrow's technology to today'
Apple's new mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, went on sale in stores across the US today. The device, which has drawn attention for its starting price of $3,500, has become a subject of debate regarding why it is so expensive.
Apple Vision Pro began hitting store shelves in the US today. CEO Tim Cook, who traveled to New York for the device's launch, made statements regarding why the product's price is so high.
The mixed-reality headset Apple Vision Pro, which opened for pre-orders last week, officially took its place in stores today. Customers in the US can try out and purchase different versions of the device, which start at $3,499 and can go up to $4,547.
Apple CEO Tim Cook visited a store in New York to mark the launch of the Vision Pro and also gave an interview on the program Good Morning America. During the interview, he explained the high price of the Vision Pro through its technological features. Cook stated that the device "brings tomorrow's technology to today" and spoke as follows:
"I think it's tomorrow's technology today. We have 5,000 patents on it, and so we've invested a lot in it. Many people will choose to pay monthly, and some will buy it outright. Many people I've spoken to online have said they will buy it. We don't know what will happen in the future, but we think we have priced it correctly for right now."
Cook also spoke about the use cases for the device, which they call a "spatial computer" rather than a VR/AR headset, and its importance to Apple. Noting that people can interact with the Vision Pro for various purposes, the executive said, "Because it's a spatial computer, it will be used in a wide variety of ways for different purposes. People will use it for FaceTime, for education, or as a tool for surgeons to train. The use cases are quite broad, and there are currently over 1 million apps available."
Finally, Cook stated that the Vision Pro can enhance reality without damaging the connection between people. According to the CEO, the feature that keeps the eyes visible while using the device will strengthen the bond between people and help maintain a connection with the outside world.
