Astrophotographer Mehmet Ergün wins award for Sun photograph

Astrophotographers, who use technological equipment to capture frames that resemble scenes from science fiction films and are impossible to see with the human eye, are producing unique images. A Turkish astrophotographer has been awarded in the Sun category at the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition organized by the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London. Mehmet Ergün, who captures space with his photographs, was deemed worthy of the third-place award in the Sun category.

The "Astronomy Photographer of the Year" competition, held for the 15th time this year, is known as a more difficult category compared to others in the Sun category. The competition, which received applications with more than 4 thousand photographs from 64 countries, holds the distinction of being the most prestigious astronomy photography competition. The photograph taken by Ergün, which earned him third place, features a massive solar flare. Special equipment and filters were used for the photograph, which was taken with a 500-millimeter lens.

Turkish astrophotographer Mehmet Ergün, who captures rare moments in space, said, “I have achieved several successes in the international arena with the photographs I have taken. The latest award I won holds a very great meaning for me.

I reached third place in the 2023 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition at the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London thanks to my Sun photograph. It is a great honor for me to be selected from among more than 4 thousand photographs from 64 different countries in this prestigious competition. Being among the winners in the Sun category worldwide has made me very happy,” he said.
