The 800XL, one of Atari's prominent home computers from the 1980s, is being prepared for a relaunch with updated hardware and connectivity options. Retaining its classic design, the new model aims to bring the retro computing experience to today's screens with HDMI output, USB ports, a mechanical keyboard, and pre-installed games.
Although the Atari name is mostly associated with the 2600 game console, the company's 800 series home computers also reached a wide user base in their time. First released in 1979, this family of computers remained in existence until the early 1990s. The 800XL was known as one of the models in the series with a refreshed design and a larger chassis.
The revamped Atari 800XL retains the core functions of the original model while meeting modern connectivity needs. The device can be connected to televisions and monitors via HDMI, while USB ports allow for the use of joysticks and various accessories.
COMES WITH 25 GAMES
The new Atari 800XL will come with 25 classic games pre-installed. These games include well-known Atari titles such as Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, and Missile Command. The visual capacity of the eight-bit system focuses on a retro experience similar to the NES era rather than modern games.
The device will not be limited to pre-installed games. Its cartridge slot will support game cartridges produced for the original system. Additionally, it will be possible to load games from different systems, such as the Atari 400 and Atari 5200, via USB.
The box will also include a joystick reminiscent of classic Atari controllers. Designed to be close to the design language of the era, this accessory will be rechargeable via USB, unlike the older models.
One of the notable aspects of the new model is that it can be used not only as a retro gaming device but also as a programmable home computer. Featuring a full-sized mechanical keyboard, the Atari 800XL will provide access to the Atari BASIC environment. This will allow users to develop their own software and games in addition to playing the pre-installed ones.
It is stated that the device is also compatible with software developed by independent developers in the past. This will make it possible to run homebrew content produced for Atari computers in the 1980s on the new hardware.
The retail price for the new Atari 800XL, designed by Plaion Replai—known for its retro computer and console projects—is announced as 220 dollars. The device, for which the pre-order process has begun, is scheduled to begin shipping on April 23, 2027.
