ChatGPT completes its first year; what has changed and evolved?

ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI that can write text, poetry, and even computer code upon command, is celebrating its first anniversary following its launch on November 30, 2022.

Surpassing 100 million users just 2 months after its release to become one of the fastest-growing applications, ChatGPT has also inspired many other applications.

Following ChatGPT, Google's parent company Alphabet introduced its new technology named "Bard," while the AI company xAI, owned by X social media platform owner Elon Musk, announced its new artificial intelligence model called "Grok."

NEW FEATURES ARRIVED FOR CHATGPT

The GPT-4 version of the robot, which has been further developed over time, was launched on March 14. The robot, which previously worked only on text-focused tasks, was improved to be able to interpret images, and in addition, the accuracy rate of the answers provided by the robot increased in the new version.

In a statement made by OpenAI in September, it was reported that new voice and image capabilities would begin to be made available in ChatGPT. It was stated that thanks to the new features, users would be able to participate in voice conversations and receive voice responses from the chatbot, and it was also underlined that images could be shared with ChatGPT.

Around the same time, it was announced that the application could update itself by acquiring new information from the internet and would no longer be limited to data from before 2021.

While the new and more powerful "GPT-4 Turbo" artificial intelligence model was announced on November 6, it was reported that while previous versions accepted inputs of up to 3 thousand words, GPT-4 Turbo could accept inputs up to 300 pages in length.

DEVELOPER COMPANY IN TURMOIL

On the other hand, concerns regarding ChatGPT and the rapid development of artificial intelligence have also increased.

The Italian Data Protection Authority launched an investigation into OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot in March on suspicion of violating rules on collecting personal data and temporarily suspended access to the application.

In the statement made by the agency, it was reported that access to ChatGPT, which was stated to have illegally collected the personal data of Italian users, was temporarily blocked until it met the requirements of Italy's privacy standards and regulations.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada also announced in April that it had launched an investigation into the application following complaints about the "unauthorized collection, use, and disclosure of personal information."

It was stated that the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched an investigation into OpenAI in July regarding whether it violated consumer protection laws by putting personal reputations and data at risk.

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of South Korea fined OpenAI because the payment information of ChatGPT application subscribers was exposed for 9 hours.

MAJOR CRISIS IN MANAGEMENT

Following the unique success of the application, a turbulent period began at OpenAI.

In a statement made in November, it was reported that the company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Altman had left his post.

Upon this, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, which owns approximately 49 percent of OpenAI, also announced on November 19 that Altman would join Microsoft to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence research team.

OpenAI employees demanded the resignation of the current board of directors and threatened to leave their posts and follow Altman to work at Microsoft, the company's largest investor.

Following these threats, OpenAI announced that Altman had returned to the company as CEO with a new board of directors.
