ChatGPT developer OpenAI may produce its own chips

OpenAI, which has become one of the most talked-about companies in the world with the ChatGPT it developed, may start producing its own AI-powered chips due to the chip shortage. There are dozens of companies providing chip support, but there is significant competition here, and companies now want to produce their own chips.

It appears that OpenAI will start producing its own AI chips due to both the daily cost of ChatGPT being 700 thousand dollars and the chip shortage.

WILL NEED 16 BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF CHIPS ANNUALLY

Alternatives sought for expensive chips include working with Nvidia and certain key suppliers.

The fact that ChatGPT is offered for free has put the company in a bottleneck. Even having a paid version does not provide much benefit to the company. Considering the information in Reuters that each query made on ChatGPT costs 4 cents, the searches reveal a massive expense.

If the searches made with ChatGPT or the answers sought were to increase to even one-tenth of the rate of Google searches, the cost of keeping the system running would mean 48.1 billion dollars worth of GPUs. This means that approximately 16 billion dollars worth of chips will be needed per year.

There are currently no concrete developments on the subject, but OpenAI's plans are expected to emerge in the coming period.
