A code sequence named 'iris' has been found in the beta version of the Google app. This suggests that the plan known as Project Iris will cover the smart glasses side of things.

Google's Glass smart glasses were once touted as the biggest breakthrough in technology. Offered with limited availability in 2013 and disappearing shortly after being released to the public in 2014, this device was canceled some time after its high price tag of 1,500 dollars was announced.

Google launched the Enterprise Edition in 2017 to increase productivity in workplaces, and although the second version of the model arrived in 2019, these glasses also had a short lifespan and were completely discontinued in March 2023.

While the journey of these short-lived smart glasses from Google continues like this for now, the discovered code has raised hopes.

Prior to this, early last year, The Verge claimed that Google was developing an AR headset codenamed Project Iris. While no new details about this project have emerged, a report reached by Business Insider also underscores that Google wanted to develop smart glasses rather than an AR headset, but that it also canceled this after a while.

According to another source, a code sequence called iris was spotted in the latest beta of the Google app for Android. According to 9to5Google, there are references to activating a device by long-pressing on its right side, in addition to using Google Assistant.

According to sources close to Google, such steps indicate that the company could bring back Google Glass.
