Huawei is making its impact felt; decline in iPhone demand in China

Apple's recent performance in the Chinese smartphone market stands as a mix of challenges and opportunities. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF Securities pointed out that there was a significant decline in iPhone shipments, particularly for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, due to supply chain issues at Foxconn. This decline resulted in a reduction of 12 million units in November 2022. The desired growth has also not been achieved in the current generation.

HUAWEI HAS MADE A COMEBACK

According to details reported in Donanımhaber, part of this setback can also be attributed to the resurgence of Huawei, which has caused structural changes in the Chinese market. Apple expects this trend to continue through 2024 and for shipments to weaken further.

Although Apple faced a 3 percent drop in its share price in the fourth quarter of 2023 following flat year-over-year revenue and sales forecasts, it managed to narrowly beat revenue estimates, reaching 89.50 billion dollars. The lower-than-expected performance was due to sluggish demand for iPads and wearables, as well as a slight decline in revenue in China. However, CEO Tim Cook remains optimistic, highlighting the record sales quarter in September and emphasizing Apple's commitment to the Chinese market.

This optimism seems to be supported by price discounts on e-commerce platforms for the iPhone 15 series and Apple's ongoing innovation efforts. Even though Apple faces competition from Huawei's Mate 60 Pro and legal challenges, the company's strategy appears confident, as evidenced by the recent increase in service revenue and Tim Cook's visit to China.

On a global scale, Apple continues to maintain a strong market share, leading ahead of Samsung. This strength is also evident in India, where Apple recorded its highest quarterly growth to date with more than 2.5 million iPhone shipments, a 34 percent increase compared to the previous year.

This increase is attributed to consumers showing interest in premium smartphones thanks to financing options and attractive offers. Due to Apple's focus on the market and local manufacturing initiatives, its market share in India is expected to increase from 4.5 percent to 6 percent. Apple may be aiming to compensate for what it has lost in China with gains in India in the future.
