Regulation to turn sewage into drinking water is on the way
California is preparing to adopt regulations that will allow sewage to be converted into drinking water and delivered directly to taps.
As a result of efforts to create new supply sources, California wants to convert more of its sewage water. This regulation, which includes offering it to people as drinking water, will enable the method known as "direct potable reuse," which allows highly treated water to be fed directly into the drinking water system.
FROM SEWAGE TO DRINKING WATER
Research director Heather Cooley says, "This is not about wasting valuable resources, but about recovering them. I think this is a really exciting opportunity to help realize a vision of a more circular approach to water."
The regulations are expected to be approved this week and work is expected to begin.
