AKP Gaziantep Deputy Ali Şahin has issued a written statement regarding the controversy that arose after his post claiming that world-famous former footballer Roberto Carlos had converted to Islam.

Şahin, who was in Brazil and Chile for contacts as part of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) and AND Group activities, stated that he shared the information conveyed to him during his visit to São Paulo on his social media account.

Şahin stated that they visited Sheikh Jihad Hammadeh and the Islamic Charitable Youth Union of Brazil in São Paulo, and that Hammadeh told them that Roberto Carlos had recited the Shahada four weeks ago and chosen Islam.

Stating that he shared this information not for the purpose of speculation, but as a "piece of good news" coming from an opinion leader he respects, Şahin emphasized that he cited Hammadeh as his source in his post.

Şahin further argued that the information was not merely a verbal account. He noted that he, the deputy consul, and other members of the delegation watched a video, which he stated was recorded by Hammadeh's phone, showing Carlos reciting the Shahada.

Stating that he did not foresee that his post would cause such a global stir, Şahin expressed his regret that Roberto Carlos was put in a difficult position due to the controversy. Concluding his statement with prayers and well wishes, Şahin stated that the matter is closed as far as he is concerned.
