Patrick Vieira era begins for the Senegal national team
Patrick Vieira, who most recently managed Genoa, has taken charge of the Senegal national team, succeeding Pape Thiaw.
Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the head coach of the Senegal national team. The French manager takes over the seat left vacant by Pape Thiaw, who departed the role in July 2026.
The 49-year-old Vieira most recently served at Italian Serie A side Genoa. During his time at the helm of Genoa, the French coach managed 37 matches, achieving an average of 1.14 points per game.
Vieira, who began his managerial career in the Manchester City youth system, has previously worked at New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa. The Senegal role will be the first national team experience of Vieira's career.
In this new era following Pape Thiaw, who served in Senegal between December 2024 and July 2026, Vieira's goal will be to lead the team to success during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualification process.
