Romain Bardet wins the opening stage of the Tour de France

The Tour de France opening stage was won by French cyclist Romain Bardet of the DSM-Firmenich PostNL team.

Considered the oldest and most prestigious of the tours since it has been held since 1903, the Tour de France started outside of France for the 26th time. Italy hosted the opening stage for the first time in the history of the organization.

In the 206-kilometer opening stage between Florence and Rimini, Romain Bardet took first place with a time of 5 hours, 7 minutes, and 22 seconds, becoming the owner of the yellow jersey for the first time.

Bardet's teammate, Dutch rider Frank Van Den Broek, took second place, while Belgian Wout van Aert from the Visma-Lease a Bike team finished third.

The organization will continue tomorrow with the 199.2-kilometer stage between Cesenatico and Bologna.

The tour will conclude in Nice, France, on Sunday, July 21, after 21 stages.
