The World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index has re-ranked countries based on their position in the tourism sector. In the report, which evaluated 110 economies, Turkey placed 36th with 4.37 points.
Japan topped the index with 5.27 points. Japan was followed by the USA with 5.23 points and Spain with 5.22 points. The top 10 also includes Australia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Switzerland, and Italy.
The report noted that Turkey has risen 11 spots compared to its 47th place ranking in 2019. Destinations such as Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pamukkale, and the Mediterranean coast are highlighted as key factors in Turkey's natural and cultural tourism diversity.
The ranking does not measure the performance of countries in hosting the most tourists, but rather the level of development of the travel and tourism sector. The evaluation takes into account transportation facilities, tourism infrastructure, natural and cultural assets, and conditions supporting the sector.
