It had its world premiere at the 46th Atlanta Film Festival: Mendirek to be screened on MUBI

Director, screenwriter, and cinematographer Cem Demirer’s debut feature film, Mendirek, establishes strong connections between the moods of its characters and the unpredictable waters of the sea, set against the unique atmosphere of Bozcaada.

Regarding the film, which centers on the story of two fisherman cousins and features constantly escalating tension, Cem Demirer said, "The island's isolated structure turned the film into a psychological thriller. The character's entrapment there and within himself was effective."

The director added the following regarding the psychological harmony between the setting and the characters in the film, which draws attention particularly with its underwater scenes: "The sea already comes with an unknown; organically, with a sense of drowning and darkness."

Edited by Julien Testa and starring Barış Yılmaz Gündüz and Alihan Kaya, the film’s cinematography is by Sebastian Lojo, while it is produced by Eda Çarıkçı and Remi İtani.

The fact that all characters, aside from the main leads, consist of island locals and real fishermen makes the film even more compelling.

PLOT OF MENDİREK

Mendirek follows two fisherman cousins living in Bozcaada as they confront their own personalities, a hidden secret, and the growing paranoia of one of the cousins. Aslan, a young fisherman struggling with self-confidence issues, discovers a rare and highly valuable lobster cave while diving.

As his cousin Yılmaz’s suspicions about Aslan—who shares this secret with no one—gradually increase, the dark sides of both men begin to surface.

The story, shaped by the cousins' seemingly opposite personalities and their equally similar loneliness, takes an interesting turn as Yılmaz’s perception of reality fractures under the weight of his growing paranoia.
