Meta introduces 'Take It Down' platform to combat non-consensual sharing of intimate images

Meta has introduced Take It Down, an emergency platform developed in collaboration with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and designed to proactively prevent the non-consensual sharing of intimate images of minors on the internet.

Initially launched in February 2023 with resources limited to English and Spanish, Meta has recently made the platform available in multiple languages, ensuring broader accessibility and making it easier for young people around the world to use the platform effectively.

'WE WANT TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF INTIMATE IMAGES'

Meta's Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis stated on the matter, "We are proud to support NCMEC's Take It Down platform, the first of its kind to help young people prevent their intimate images from being shared online without their consent.

Meta has worked with NCMEC, experts, and victims to develop this platform and ensure that young people have access to the resources they need when they encounter these frightening situations. We look forward to other technology companies joining this effort so that we can all fight this problem together across the internet."

As part of the initiative, Meta also announced a new anti-blackmail project in collaboration with Thorn, which aims to inform parents, educators, and young people about how to protect themselves against blackmail and how to deal with it.

Led by NCMEC, the Take It Down platform allows individuals under the age of 18, parents or trusted adults acting on behalf of a young person, and adults concerned about images taken when they were minors to proactively prevent their intimate images from being shared online.

EMPHASIS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ONLINE SAFETY

Guaranteeing privacy and data security, the platform allows users to securely send their intimate images to Take It Down directly from their devices by assigning them a digital fingerprint called a "hash value," without having to upload the images themselves. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram then use these digital fingerprints to detect and remove matching content, preventing further spread.

Meta underscores its unwavering commitment to online safety through its financial support for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the development of Take It Down, as well as its collaborations with experts, academics, parents, and victim advocates worldwide.

Building on the success of the StopNCII platform, which was run by SwGFL and designed to help adults prevent the online spread of their intimate images, this platform represents a significant step toward creating a safer online world for young users globally.
