New discovery in Pompeii: Frescoes featuring mythological figures from the Iliad found

An important discovery has been made during excavations in the ancient city of Pompeii, which was buried under ash and soil by the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

It was stated that archaeologists discovered frescoes featuring several mythological figures from the Iliad, the epic poem by the Ionian poet Homer, on the 15x6 meter black-painted wall of a magnificent banquet hall in the ancient city.

LINKED TO GREEK MYTHOLOGY

It was noted that the figures in question include the Trojan Prince Paris, Helen, the wife of the Spartan King Menelaus whom Paris abducted to Troy, and Cassandra, the daughter of the Trojan King Priam, who is said to have had the ability to see the future through prophecies in Greek mythology, all of whom were involved in the Trojan War that took place around 500 BC.

The frescoes were described as one of the most sensational discoveries made in Pompeii in recent times. It was reported that two interconnected houses, a bakery, and a laundry area were also uncovered during the discovery.

'IT CONTINUES TO SURPRISE US'

Commenting on the latest discoveries in Pompeii, Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano stated, "Pompeii truly continues to surprise us because every time we dig, we find something beautiful and important."

The ancient city of Pompeii, near Naples, is one of the top destinations visited by thousands of tourists in Italy every year.
