One of the Republic's first sculptors: Zühtü Müridoğlu's unfinished work is completed

One of the Republic's first sculptors: Zühtü Müridoğlu's unfinished work is completed

Zühtü Müridoğlu, one of the first sculpture artists of the Republic, designed a sculpture for the 50th anniversary of the Republic. However, he could not complete the sculpture due to a lack of budget.

The sculpture was completed 50 years later, in the 100th year of the Republic.

Zühtü Müridoğlu was among the first generation of artists in the history of the Republic to receive formal sculpture training and be sent abroad. Born in 1906, the artist became a student at the Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (School of Fine Arts) in 1924. Under the guidance of İhsan Özsoy, he decided to focus on sculpture.

After completing his education at the Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi in 1928, Müridoğlu won a European scholarship and went to Paris.

HE HELD MANY EXHIBITIONS

After returning to Turkey, the artist was appointed as a sculptor at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums in 1936 and held many exhibitions. He became a pioneering figure in Turkish sculpture. The artist, who created monumental sculptures, most notably the 'Osman Hamdi Bey Bust', also contributed to the Anıtkabir reliefs, the Dumlupınar Monument, the Muş Atatürk Monument, and the Büyükada Atatürk Monument.

Müridoğlu had designed a sculpture for the 50th anniversary of the Republic, but he could not have the bronze casting done due to budget constraints. Fifty years later, in memory of the 100th anniversary of the Republic, support was provided to complete this meaningful sculpture. The sculpture was prepared as a bronze casting.

THE WORK WAS CONDUCTED BY A SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE

According to the report in 10 Haber, the stages of drawing, photographing, documenting, molding, and bronze casting of the four-meter-high, circular column-shaped sculpture were carried out under the decisions of a Scientific Committee consisting of Rahmi Aksungur, Aykut Köksal, Fatma Akyürek, and Hasan Karakaya.

Müridoğlu's work, completed after many years, will be exhibited in front of the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture.

The sculpture will be opened to the public in front of the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture with a ceremony to be held on Wednesday, March 6.
