Sudden weight loss and loss of appetite: Could be a sign of stomach cancer
It has been revealed that sudden weight loss and loss of appetite could be signs of stomach cancer. Prof. Dr. Taner Oruğ stated, "Stomach cancer is more common in men than in women," and added: "Sudden weight loss and loss of appetite can be signs of stomach cancer."
Experts stated that in order to diagnose stomach cancer early, symptoms such as sudden weight loss, stomach pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, bloody stools, weakness, and fatigue should be evaluated carefully.
Stomach cancer, which is seen more in men than in women and generally in individuals over 60, unfortunately has a lower rate of early diagnosis compared to other types of cancer.
'IT STARTS IN THE INNER LAYER OF THE STOMACH WALL'
General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Taner Oruğ emphasized that early diagnosis in stomach cancer is of great importance for the treatment process, saying, "Stomach cancer is a type of cancer that usually occurs as a result of the uncontrolled growth and multiplication of cells on the inner surface of the stomach. Stomach cancer usually starts in the inner layer of the stomach wall and can spread to other layers over time. Sudden weight loss and loss of appetite can be signs of stomach cancer."
Oruğ shared some basic information regarding risk factors, symptoms, and treatment methods for stomach cancer, which arises as a result of chronic inflammation caused by a bacterium called 'Helicobacter pylori'.
'EXCESSIVELY SALTY FOODS MAY INCREASE THE RISK'
Prof. Dr. Oruğ stated that stomach cancer is generally seen more frequently in individuals over the age of 60, adding, "Stomach cancer is more common in men than in women. It is associated with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori infection, which causes stomach ulcers. Consumption of excessively salty and smoked foods may increase the risk. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption also play a significant role in increasing the risk.
The success of treatment in stomach cancer is closely related to the stage of the disease. For this reason, symptoms such as sudden weight loss, stomach pain and discomfort, loss of appetite, vomiting, bloody stools, and weakness and fatigue must be evaluated carefully," he said.
