What is Stockholm syndrome, and what are its symptoms?

Stockholm syndrome was first defined by psychiatrist Nils Bejerot and takes its name from an incident that occurred in 1973 in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

The incident took place between a bank robber and his hostage.

The person who robbed the bank held a woman hostage for 6 days.

During this process, the hostage formed an emotional bond with the criminal who held her captive.

For this reason, Stockholm syndrome is explained as hostages understanding the emotions of their captors as if they were their own, subsequently attempting to help the criminals, and ultimately forming a bond with them.
