Economist Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan passes away at 99

The passing of Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan, one of the doyenne academics of the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics, was announced by the alumni association.

Economist Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan passes away at 99

Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan, one of the leading academics in the field of economics in Turkey, has passed away at the age of 99.

The Istanbul University Faculty of Economics Alumni Association announced Kazgan's passing on its social media account. The statement read, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan, one of the doyenne academics of the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics, a valuable scientist, our dear teacher, and a mentor to many. Information regarding our esteemed professor's funeral will be shared at a later time."

It was reported that details regarding the funeral ceremony will be shared with the public later.

ACADEMIC LIFE AND WORK

Born in Istanbul on June 5, 1927, Gülten Kazgan graduated from the American College for Girls and subsequently from the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics in 1950. Having completed her doctorate at the same faculty, Kazgan went to the USA on a Rockefeller scholarship to work with Theodore W. Schultz at the University of Chicago. Schultz would go on to win the Nobel Prize in Economics in later years.

Following her return to Turkey, Kazgan continued her academic career at the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics, becoming an associate professor in 1961 and later rising to the rank of professor. Her work focused on agricultural economics, development, the Turkish economy, economic thought, and globalization.

Having taught at Istanbul University for many years, Kazgan retired in 1994. Continuing her academic activities later at İstanbul Bilgi University, Kazgan played a role in the university's founding process and served as the Founding Rector of İstanbul Bilgi University. She received the title of Professor Emeritus in 2010.

Among Kazgan's prominent works are Economic Thought / The Evolution of Political Economy, Agriculture and Development, Export-Oriented Growth in the Economy, The Turkish Economy from the Tanzimat to the 21st Century, Globalization and the Nation-State, and Crises in the Turkish Economy.
