2 killed in attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea

The first loss of life has occurred in attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

British and US officials announced that 2 people lost their lives in a missile attack carried out by the Houthis on the Barbados-flagged cargo ship True Confidence, which is operated by Greece.

In a statement issued by the UK, it was stated, "At least 2 innocent sailors have died. This was the sad but inevitable consequence of the Houthis' reckless missile attacks on international shipping. They must stop. Our deepest condolences are with the families of those who died and those who were injured."

A senior US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that two sailors were killed in the attack.

ATTACKED OFF THE COAST OF ADEN

It was reported that the True Confidence was hit by a missile attack approximately 50 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni city of Aden, and that the ship sustained damage and caught fire as a result of the attack. It was stated that there were a total of 20 crew members and 3 armed guards on board, including 15 Filipinos, 4 Vietnamese, 2 Sri Lankans, 1 Indian, and 1 Nepali.

It was noted that the ship is owned by the Liberia-registered company True Confidence Shipping and operated by the Greece-based company Third January Maritime.
