After Mexico, Trump delays tariffs on Canada too

Following a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Trump shared a post regarding the tariffs on his Truth Social account.

Trump stated that Canada has agreed to ensure the U.S. has a secure northern border and to end the flow of deadly drugs like fentanyl into the country.

Noting that Canada will implement a 1.3 billion dollar border plan, Trump reported that the country will strengthen the border with new helicopters, technology, and personnel, enhance coordination with its American partners, and increase resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.

Pointing out that approximately 10 thousand personnel are working and will continue to work to protect the border, Trump conveyed that Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau has made new commitments to appoint a "Fentanyl Czar," will list cartels as terrorists, provide 24/7 surveillance at the border, and launch a "Canada-U.S. Joint Task Force" to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering.

Stating that Trudeau has also signed a new intelligence directive regarding organized crime and fentanyl and will support this with 200 million dollars, Trump noted the following:

"As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of all Americans, and that is what I am doing. I am very pleased with this initial result, and the tariffs announced on Saturday will be suspended for a 30-day period to see if a final economic agreement can be reached with Canada."

U.S. President Trump had imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10 percent tariff on imports from China, with an executive order he signed on February 1.

Following a phone call he held today with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump had announced that he was suspending the tariff imposed on that country for 1 month in exchange for Mexico increasing its border security.
