Algeria reportedly preparing to end 19-month diplomatic crisis with Spain

Spain's El Confidencial newspaper reported that the "Spain-Algeria diplomatic crisis,'' which began after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez changed his country's policy on Western Sahara in a letter written to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on March 14, 2022, expressing support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, is coming to an end.

AMBASSADOR TO BE APPOINTED

The country's press reported that the Algerian government has decided to end the crisis with Spain and appoint Abdelfetah Daghmoum, a former foreign ministry advisor currently in Madrid, as the new Ambassador to Madrid.

"VETO TO BE LIFTED GRADUALLY"

The report claimed that with the normalization of diplomatic relations, the veto on Spanish exports will also be lifted gradually.

SPAIN-ALGERIA RELATIONS

The Spanish government took action in March 2022 to resolve the diplomatic crisis it was experiencing with Morocco over the Western Sahara issue and to normalize bilateral relations.

In a letter sent to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced his support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco regarding the Western Sahara issue, and subsequently traveled to Rabat on April 7 to sign bilateral agreements that initiated the normalization process of bilateral relations.

Following these developments, Algeria recalled its Ambassador to Madrid for consultations and froze commercial relations with Spain.
