A widespread flood disaster occurred in the Gorkha region of northern Nepal as a result of the Budhi Gandaki River overflowing. As residential areas were submerged due to the sudden rise in river waters, severe infrastructure damage occurred in the region.
According to a statement by Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, initial assessments indicate that more than 40 houses were swept away by floodwaters. It was reported that numerous bridges and connecting roads have also become unusable.
Authorities have evacuated residents living in villages and towns at risk to safer areas. According to information reflected in the local press, 5 people who went missing during the flood have still not been heard from; search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts.
The exact cause of the flood has not yet been officially announced. However, it was stated that initial investigations and satellite imagery suggest that a landslide blocking the riverbed may have triggered the flood.
In August, a similar flood caused by a glacier collapse occurred in the Rasuwa region near the Chinese border in Nepal, damaging bridges and roads. It is reported that the death toll due to natural disasters and floods in the country has reached 1455.
