Crime rates rise in Germany

Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, President of the Conference of Interior Ministers and Minister of the Interior of the State of Brandenburg Michael Stübgen, and President of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) Holger Münch presented the 2023 Criminal Crime Statistics Report to the public in Berlin.

Minister Faeser stated that a total of 5 million 940 thousand crimes were recorded nationwide in 2023, noting that this figure represents a 5.5 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Faeser reported that the number of violent crimes in 2023 was determined to be 214 thousand 99, an increase of 8.6 percent compared to last year, and stated that this figure has been recorded as the highest level in the last 15 years.

'DEPORTATION RULES MUST BE ENFORCED'

Expressing that there has been an increase in violent crimes, crimes against young people, and crimes committed by foreigners, Faeser said:

"It is important to me that the rule of law takes tough measures against violence. Zero tolerance applies here. Concretely, this means swift trials and concrete penalties. Foreign criminals must leave Germany much more quickly. The strict deportation rules we have established must now be enforced."

Providing information that the number of police officers attacked on duty last year was 106 thousand, Faeser emphasized that this means a 10 percent increase compared to 2022, stating, "This figure is shocking and we condemn it. There is no justification for this either."

Brandenburg State Minister of the Interior Michael Stübgen stated that the increase in the number of foreign suspects is worrying, but warned that this should not lead to general suspicion.

'POLITICIANS MUST REACT'

Stübgen stated, "Millions of foreigners live here and do not commit crimes. However, if migration leads to a decrease in security, politicians must react to it. Criminals who are required to leave the country must be deported more consistently, and the limits of reception capacities must be recognized. Integration is the best way to combat migrant crime, and this can only be successful when the number of new arrivals does not overwhelm us."

Pointing out that the increasing brutalization of society is also noticeable in the online environment, Stübgen assessed, "Cyberbullying is a growing phenomenon. Victims find themselves at the mercy of numerous attackers within the anonymity and reach of the internet. This situation leads to serious consequences in all areas of life."
