Death sentence issued for ousted leader Bashar al-Assad in Syria

A verdict has been reached in the trial of former President Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and his cousin Najib Atif in Syria. The court sentenced all three individuals to death.

It was reported that Bashar al-Assad was tried in absentia and sentenced to death for war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the civil war.

Assad's cousin, Najib Atif, was accused of directing the crackdown operations against the uprising that began in the southern province of Daraa and of being linked to the events that occurred during that period. Atif attended the hearing, which was held under heavy security, wearing a prisoner's uniform.

Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher al-Assad fled to Russia after armed groups entered Damascus in December 2024. Najib Atif, however, was unable to leave the country, was captured, and became one of the high-ranking figures from the former administration to be put on trial.
