The first eruption in approximately 12,000 years has occurred at the Hayli Gubbi Volcano, situated in the Afar region of northeastern Ethiopia, near the border with Eritrea.

No loss of life or property has been reported from the eruption. Authorities stated that many villages in the region have been covered in ash and that the cloud of smoke and ash spewed by the volcano is moving toward Yemen, Oman, India, and Pakistan.

The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program noted that there have been no known eruptions at Hayli Gubbi during the Holocene Epoch, which began at the end of the last Ice Age approximately 12,000 years ago.
