Le Monde on Trump: US weakness has pushed Turkey toward new defense pursuits
The French newspaper Le Monde criticized Trump's Middle East policy, interpreting the agreement between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan as a message to the US.
Le Monde, one of France's leading newspapers, made notable assessments in an editorial examining US President Donald Trump's Middle East policy.
In the article titled "Trump's disastrous record in the Middle East," it was argued that the way crises in the region have been managed since Trump's return to the White House has damaged Washington's influence.
The newspaper criticized the Trump administration over the war initiated by the US and Israel against Iran, the tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, and its stance on the Palestinian issue. The editorial stated that the Middle East reveals the true capacity of American presidents, emphasizing "incompetence" and "lack of foresight" regarding Trump.
Le Monde wrote that Washington has occasionally hinted at the possibility of restarting a war in the tension with Iran, but may have stepped back due to pressure from Arab Gulf countries and concerns regarding US ammunition stocks.
One of the most striking comments in the editorial concerned Turkey. The newspaper stated that the US's weakness in the region "led three of its allies—Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey—to sign a mutual defense agreement."
According to Le Monde, this step served as an explicit criticism of the US's "historical protector" role in the Arabian Peninsula. The newspaper assessed that the intended show of force backfired, becoming a "sign of impotence" for Washington.
