NATO sends message of solidarity to Poland and Romania following airspace violations

NATO allies have issued a message of solidarity with Poland and Romania following a meeting held to discuss recent violations of their airspace. The alliance reiterated its assessment that Russia bears responsibility, describing the incidents as "dangerous and unacceptable."

The meeting's agenda included the numerous unmanned aerial vehicles that have entered Romanian airspace in recent weeks, as well as munitions that have fallen on Polish territory. Following a cruise missile that landed in Poland on July 29, the Warsaw administration stated that the incident may have originated from Russia.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had previously stated that the armed drone fell approximately 50 kilometers from the city of Lublin and was "likely" of Russian origin. Meanwhile, Romanian President Nicușor Dan described the Kremlin's continued violation of his country's airspace as "unacceptable and intolerable."

NATO: RESPONSIBILITY LIES WITH RUSSIA

NATO Spokesperson Allison Hart announced that allies have expressed their solidarity with Romania and Poland and condemned Russia's "reckless actions." The statement issued after the meeting noted that the airspace violations demonstrate Russia's willingness to take further risks.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also commented on the incident in Poland, stating, "This incident is another reckless act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of its war against Ukraine."

Romania's Permanent Representative to NATO, Dan Neculaescu, highlighted the importance of allies continuing their contributions to military capabilities during the meeting. Neculaescu stated that these contributions would enable both Bucharest and NATO to defend themselves more effectively.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the alliance has shown clear solidarity, adding that NATO is prepared to take new steps to strengthen security along its frontline borders and in the Baltic Sea.

The meeting coincided with a period of increased drone sightings over sensitive infrastructure in Europe. These incidents around military bases, airports, and industrial facilities have brought the issue of Europe's deterrence capacity against hybrid threats originating from Russia back to the agenda.
