Opposition figures detained on election night in Zambia: Government cites 'security threat'
Numerous people were detained in Zambia following the elections. While the government defended the claim of a security threat, the opposition reiterated criticisms of repression.
On the night presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Zambia, numerous people, including prominent opposition figures, were detained. The government defended the detentions, citing an alleged "threat to state security."
According to partial results announced while vote counting continues in the country, President Hakainde Hichilema is leading the race. The election is seen as critical in Zambia, one of Africa's major copper producers, as it will determine whether the economic gains Hichilema achieved following the debt crisis during the pandemic will be sufficient for a second term.
It was reported that opposition leader Brian Mundubile, one of Hichilema's main rivals, was also detained following an armed raid by security forces on his home after the election.
In a government statement, it was alleged that a clash occurred after shots were fired at security forces from the scene. It was claimed that the detained individuals were in possession of "high-grade military weapons, ammunition, and other materials that could be used in an armed uprising."
Opposition parties and civil society organizations had been accusing the government of increasing repressive practices leading up to the election process. Criticisms had highlighted restrictions placed on political meetings and campaign activities.
