Russia decides to close Poland's Consulate General in Kaliningrad

In a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, it was stated that the Polish chargé d'affaires in Russia had been summoned to the ministry.

During the meeting, it was recalled that Poland had decided to close Russia's Consulate General in Krakow last May, and it was stated that the Russian side had decided to close the Polish Consulate General in Kaliningrad effective August 29.

It was noted that Russia's move stemmed from Poland's "unjust and hostile actions," and it was emphasized that no hostile attack against Russia would go unanswered.

REACTION FROM POLAND

Polish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pawel Wronski stated in a press release that Russia's decision to close the Polish Consulate in Kaliningrad was an "unjust" decision. Wronski said, "Unlike Russia, Poland is not engaged in sabotage, cyberattacks, or actions against the Russian state." Wronski stated that Poland would "respond appropriately" to the decision.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The Polish administration had held Russian intelligence units responsible for a fire that broke out at a shopping center in the capital, Warsaw, last year, and had decided to close the Russian consulate in the city of Krakow in May. Russia, for its part, had denied any role in the fire. In the fire that broke out at the "Marywilska 44" shopping center on May 12, 2024, more than a thousand shops were reduced to ashes, but there were no injuries.
