Slovak Prime Minister Fico undergoes further surgery: 'His condition is very serious'
Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak announced that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is continuing treatment in the hospital following an armed attack, underwent another 2-hour surgery today. It was reported that Fico's condition remains serious.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was the target of an armed attack on Wednesday, May 15, in front of a cultural center in the town of Handlova, approximately 180 kilometers northeast of the capital Bratislava, where a government meeting was being held.
Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Robert Kalinak and Roosevelt Hospital Director Miriam Lapunikova provided an update on the current condition of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is receiving treatment at the hospital, during a press conference today.
Lapunikova reported that Fico underwent a second surgery today following his initial operation, during which dead cells and tissues remaining in the wounded area following the gunshot injuries were removed.
'HIS CONDITION IS SERIOUS'
Noting that this was a standard procedure, Lapunikova said, "He is conscious, his condition is stable, but he is still being kept in intensive care. His condition is extremely serious."
SEARCH AT SUSPECT'S HOME
While it was announced that Slovak police have charged one person with attempted murder, local Slovak media reported that the suspect is 71 years old and a former security guard at a shopping center.
While no official statement has been made regarding the suspect's identity, police conducted a search lasting several hours at the suspect's home in the town of Levice.
