Spain retaliates against Italy's Schengen decision

The Spanish administration has taken action against Italy, with whom relations have become strained due to the influx of migrants from the Moroccan border into Ceuta, an autonomous city that is Spanish territory in North Africa.

The Spanish government announced that, due to the dispute over irregular migration, it will implement border controls for flights and ships arriving from Italy from midnight until September 7.

Within this scope, passport, nationality, and visa checks will be conducted for Italian passengers arriving from Italy and for visitors arriving from other countries.

What happened?

Italy, which does not share a land border with Spain, had suspended the EU's Schengen agreement, which allows for free movement, with Spain, citing the need to prevent irregular migrants who entered Ceuta illegally from crossing into Italy. Earlier today, the Spanish administration had warned that it would retaliate if the border controls implemented by Italy following the influx of irregular migrants into Ceuta were not lifted by Sunday. Italy, in turn, had declared that it would not bow to "ultimatums or impositions" from Spain and would continue border controls for those arriving from the country until at least August 15.
