Trump sworn in, El Paso border crossing in Texas closed

Reports in the U.S. press and on social media showed armored police officers closing the border crossing in the city of El Paso, Texas.

Announcements made over loudspeakers warned, "Those who cross this point will face detention, prosecution, and, if necessary, physical force."

The Customs and Border Protection agency had also announced that, following Trump's inauguration, the "CBP One" application, which allows for legal immigration to the country, had been removed.

Drawing attention to the issue of irregular migrants in the country, Trump had stated that he would declare a National Emergency regarding the U.S.-Mexico border, as he did in 2019, to block illegal migration and deport these individuals.

In his speech, Trump, who referred to irregular migrants as "criminals," had also announced that he would send troops to the U.S. southern border.
