US adds Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples executives to sanctions list

The US government has added new measures to its sanctions against Cuba. The Washington administration announced that it has added 9 Cuban state institutions and three individuals linked to the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) to its sanctions list.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the decision was directed at ICAP, alleging that the institution supports a "broad subversive network aimed at identifying, recruiting, and radicalizing subversive elements" within the United States.

The individuals sanctioned include ICAP President Fernando González Llort, First Vice President Noemí Rabaza Fernández, and North America Director Leima Martínez Freire.

Fernando González Llort is one of the individuals known in Cuba as the "Cuban Five." The Cuban Five took on the task of preventing attacks against Cuba by counter-revolutionary groups in Miami approximately 30 years ago; they returned to their country after years of campaigns and struggles.

It was reported that the institutions added to the US sanctions list include the Cuban Ministry of Construction, as well as companies operating in the fields of mining, metallurgy, and foreign trade.

REACTION FROM HAVANA

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla condemned the US administration's decision in a statement on his X account. Rodríguez stated that Washington's measures against Cuba specifically hinder the transport of containers carrying food, medicine, and medical equipment.

Rodríguez emphasized that ICAP has been promoting friendship, international solidarity, justice, and peace for over 60 years. The Cuban Foreign Minister stated that these values are the exact opposite of the line Rubio advocates in his Cuba policy.

The Cuban Foreign Minister also said that US restrictions in the energy sector have "real and serious" effects on the Cuban people. Rodríguez described this policy as part of the "collective punishment" the US government is inflicting on the Cuban people.
