US establishes task force against birth tourism: Over 600 visas revoked

The US Department of State has taken a new step targeting foreign nationals deemed to be traveling to the country for the purpose of securing US citizenship for their children. The Department announced the establishment of a "Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force."

The statement noted that, in line with the instructions of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a joint effort is being conducted with the Department of Homeland Security to prevent the misuse of non-immigrant visas.

The US has announced it is tightening visa inspections against birth tourism.

It was noted that the task force identifies individuals deemed to be engaging in or facilitating birth tourism by reviewing the travel histories and activities of visa holders. Within the scope of these efforts, it was reported that more than 600 visas of foreign nationals worldwide have been revoked.

The Department alleged that some intermediaries present themselves as doulas, midwives, or health consultants, offering services for "birth in the US," visa consulting, and hospital arrangements. The statement claimed that in some cases, fraudulent medical documents were issued or applicants were coached to conceal their true purpose of travel.

The statement warned that foreign nationals who intentionally make false declarations regarding their purpose of travel may become permanently ineligible for a US visa or entry into the country.

The US Department of State stated that practices against birth tourism will continue, adding, "Citizenship is not a commodity to be obtained through the planned exploitation of immigration laws."
