US strikes ship attempting to breach blockade with missile
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz with two missiles fired from a helicopter after the vessel attempted to breach the naval blockade imposed on Iran despite all warnings.
The naval blockade imposed by the US on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz continues.
In a statement released by CENTCOM, it was reported that earlier in the day, a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship named Vela Nova was passing through the Gulf of Oman, heading toward a port in Iran, and attempting to violate the US blockade on Iran.
The statement noted that after the ship ignored repeated warnings from US forces, an MH-60 helicopter belonging to the US Navy fired two Hellfire-type missiles at the vessel's engine room, disabling the ship's steering system.
The statement added, "The ship is no longer proceeding toward Iran in violation of the US blockade currently in effect.
The blockade in question remains fully in effect," it said.
According to CENTCOM data, as of August 11, US forces have diverted 55 commercial vessels attempting to bypass the blockade, neutralized 3 ships that did not comply with warnings, and boarded 2 ships with troops.
